A select collection of paintings and pictures has been professionally hung on our walls and we extend a warm welcome to you to view them. Of particular interest are our paintings dating from the 1860s which document the changes to the foreshore.

Brighton has been the home of many women artists and within our collection are works by Jessie Traill, Norah Gurdon, sisters Jessie and Ethel Evans and Victoria’s first professional woman sculptor, Margaret Baskerville. Her well-known statue of Sir Thomas Bent, nine times Mayor of Brighton, stands proudly next to his wife’s memorial on the corner of Bay Street and Nepean Highway.

The BHS collection complements that of the Bayside Council and sometimes our paintings are displayed in the Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre galleries.

We acknowledge that we meet and work on the traditional land of the Ngaruk Willam of the Boon Wurrung language people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
